Crossroads Cafe now available on DVD

Filed under: New Resource — Jenn @ 9:48 am

The popular ESL “dramedy” Crossroads Cafe is now available on an easily accessible format that you and your students can enjoy at home and in the classroom.

The Library has purchased two complete sets of this show– one set of 26 individual-episode DVDs and another set that consolidates the entire series into two 2-disc collections (called Set A and Set B).  And we still have the VHS versions as well as all the supporting print material!

English language learners at C.O.D. have been enjoying Crossroads Cafe since 2004.  Now it’s even easier to bring the stories of this entertaining series into your classroom!

More Films!

Filed under: New Resource — Jenn @ 1:51 pm

Films On Demand is a collection of streaming videos on a wide range of topics– if you’re off-campus, you will need your Library card for access.

Bring American History videos into the classroom or assign a short Career Exploration video as homework.  There are dozens of choices to support any range of subjects or topics.

Some films even have instructor’s guides with suggestions on how to incorporate the video into your curriculum.

Have questions about Films on Demand or other streaming media available through the Library?  Let me know!

Research 101

Filed under: New Resource — Jenn @ 3:27 pm

Are your students working on a research project?  Would you like to introduce yours students to library tools, tips and tactics?  Looking for a research refresher for yourself so you can better instruct your students?

Research 101 is a six-unit, self-paced online tutorial designed to introduce  students to the basics of college research.  Each unit covers an important segment of the research process and can stand alone as a primer or be incorporated into your own curriculum.  Units have review quizzes, activities and handouts.

Research 101 is a new tool for the Library and was designed to help librarians and faculty reach students who are new to academic research or need refreshers on certain topics.  If your students do research, please consider referring to Research 101, incorporating it into your class or assigning any part of it to your students.

We’d love to hear your experiences after using and exploring Research 101– give us your feedback at http://www.cod.edu/library/research/research101/feedback.htm or share your comments here.

As always, feel free to email me directly at kelleyj@cod.edu

The ESL Library Orientation menu describes some of the options available to you and your students.  We offer a range of possibilities:   from a general Library tour to more focused explorations of College and Career Information Center resources.  Once you’ve settled on an agenda for your library visit, you can customize the experience with a selection from our suggested library activities.  Whether your students just need an introduction to the Library’s website or are ready to do some research, we have an activity that will challenge and engage your class.

Don’t see what you’re looking for the menu?  Contact me and let me know what you want your students to do– I can create an activity or orientation that meets your needs.

Learning Express Library is a fantastic resource for practice tests and tutorials on a wide range of skills– everything from reading and writing, to math, science and vocational skills.  With a Library card, our students have access to hundreds of resources which can prepare them for tests or reinforce classroom learning.

In addition to the practice tests and course series, Learning Express Library also features a wide range of Ebooks on topics like Academic Test Prep, Math Skills, Workplace Skills and Career Tools, and Reading and Writing Skills.  You can see a list of all the titles by clicking on EBOOKS in the menu on the Learning Express Library homepage, and now you can also search for these titles in the C.O.D. Library Catalog!

To see all of the LEL Ebooks, just type “Learning Express” into the catalog as an Author search– the catalog will direct you to full list of all the titles.  You can also do a search for “Learning Express” and “math” or “science” or “GED”.  All Ebook titles are available as PDFs and will download and open using Adobe Acrobat.  To get Acrobat for your computer, visit the Library’s free plugin page.
